Inherited from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀡𑀡𑀁𑀤𑀸 (ṇaṇaṃdā), from Sanskrit ननान्दृ (nánāndṛ). Cognate with Gujarati નણંદ (naṇand), Hindi ननद (nanad), Sindhi نِڻُن / निणुन, Nepali नन्द (nanda).
