Borrowed from Persian نشان (nešân), from an earlier نیشان (nišân), from Middle Persian [script needed] (nyšʾn' /nīšān/). Compare Punjabi ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ (niśān) / نشان (nśān), Gujarati નિશાન (niśān), Marathi निशाण (niśāṇ), Bengali নিশান (niśan), Kannada ನಿಶಾನೆ (niśāne).
