Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *peh₃- (to drink).

Cognate with Ancient Greek πόσις (pósis) whence symposium (drinking together); Latin pōtō whence English potion and poison; Proto-Slavic *pivo (beer). Also compare the noun पात्र (pātra, drinking vessel, goblet).
