Etymology 1
Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂w- (“little; young; offspring”) (compare पुत्र (putra)) and cognate with Lithuanian putýtis (“young animal, (young) bird”). However, variety of forms (with retroflexion and aspiration) indicate a non-Aryan substrate borrowing instead.
