Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *bʰagás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰagás, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰh₂g-ó-s, from *bʰeh₂g- (“to divide, distribute”).
Cognate with Avestan 𐬠𐬀𐬖𐬀 (baγa, “god”), Old Persian 𐎲𐎥 (baga, “god”). Compare also Proto-Slavic *bogъ, an Iranian borrowing. The Sanskrit root is भज् (bhaj) .
