Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘦𑘰𑘏𑘜 (mākhaṇa), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀫𑀁𑀔𑀡 (maṃkhaṇa), from Sanskrit म्रक्षण (mrakṣaṇa). Compare Hindi माखन (mākhan), Kachchi મખણ (makhaṇ), Bengali মাখন (makhon).
