Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *mr̥gás (“forest animal”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬖𐬀‎ (mər^əγa, “bird”), Sogdian 𐼺𐽀𐼲𐼷‎ (mrɣy, “bird”). Also related to Persian ‎ (morğ, “hen”).
