मेरा

Hindi

Etymology

Inherited from Sauraseni Apabhramsa मेरय m (meraya), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀫𑀳 (maha, genitive singular) + Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀓𑁂𑀭 (kera) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-). The first element is from a variant genitive in Prakrit of Sanskrit अहम् (aham), and the second element is ultimately from Sanskrit कार्य (kārya), used as a marker of possession even in Prakrit, cf. का (, genitive affix). [1] Cognate with Assamese মোৰ (mür), Punjabi ਮੇਰਾ (merā).
