Borrowed from Portuguese leilão, from Arabic الإِعْلَام (al-ʔiʕlām, “notice, instruction”). Compare Gujarati લિલામ (lilām), Kannada ಲಿಲಾವು (lilāvu), Hindi नीलाम (nīlām), Bengali নিলাম (nilam).
