Semi-learned borrowing from Sanskrit लोक (loká), via Old Hindi लोग (loga), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀮𑁄𑀕 (loga).
Use as a plural marker in some dialects is probably generalization of हम लोग (ham log, “us”).
