Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hwákṣati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hwákšati, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wég-se-ti, from *h₂weg- (“to increase, grow”). Cognate with Ancient Greek αὔξω (aúxō), Persian وخشیدن (vaxšidan, “to grow”), Latin augeō, Old English weaxan (whence English wax). Compare also English augment, a Latin borrowing.
