Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘭𑘩 (sala), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀲𑀮𑁆𑀮 (salla), from Sanskrit शल्य (śalyá). Compare Hindustani سَال / साल (sāl, thorn, pain), Sindhi سَلُ / सलु, Punjabi ਸੱਲ (salla) / سَلّ (sall), Nepali साल (sāl, afterbirth), Oriya ସାଲ୍ (sal), ସାଲ (salô, mortise), Bengali শাল (śal, impaling stake), Assamese শাল (xal), Sinhalese සල (sala, arrow, dart).
