Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀲𑀢𑁂𑀭 (*satera), borrowed from Middle Persian [script needed] (styl /stēr/), borrowed from Ancient Greek στατήρ (statḗr, “unit of weight; a stater”). Cognate to Khotanese [script needed] (satīra), [script needed] (sera), Gandhari 𐨯𐨟𐨅𐨪‎ (satera).
