Learned borrowing from Sanskrit अलस (alasa, “lazy”), a corruption of अरस (arasa, “weak, unhappy”), composed of अ- (a-, negating prefix) + रस (rasa, “juice, pleasure”). Doublet of রস (roś, “sweet juice or liquid”), রসাল (rosal, “succulent, entertaining”), রসি (rośi, “sugarcane juice, serum”), রসুই (rosui, “kitchen, cooking”), রসায়ন (rosaẏon, “chemistry, body fluid vessels”), and রসান (rosan, “metal-polishing stone”).
