From Classical Persian روزه (roza, “fast”), which is from Middle Persian [script needed] (rōzag, “fasting”), ultimately from Proto-Iranian *ráwčakah. Cognate with Assamese ৰোজা (rüza), Baluchi روچگ (rōčag), and Southern Kurdish ڕووژە (rûje). Doublet of রোজ (rōj), another Iranian borrowing.
