Borrowed from Persian صاحب (sâheb), from Arabic صَاحِب (ṣāḥib, “companion, master”). Cognate with Punjabi ਸਾਹਬ (sāhab) / صاحب (ṣāḥb), Gujarati સાહેબ (sāheb), Marathi साहेब (sāheb) and Hindi साहिब (sāhib). Doublet of সাহাবা (sahaba).
