সুন্দর

Bengali

Etymology

Learned borrowing from Sanskrit सुन्दर (sundara), from earlier सूनर (sūnára, possessing vital strength, mighty) with addition of a medial plosive (-d-), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hsu-Hnáras (having good manpower), a compound of *Hsu- (good) + *Hnáras (manpower, man); thus equivalent to সু- (su-) + নর (nôr); for another case of addition of a plosive, see বাঁদর (bãdor, monkey). Doublet of সৌন্দর্য (śōundorjo) and সুঁদর (sũdor), a tadbhava.
