Etymology

Borrowed from Arabic حَلَال‎ (ḥalāl), from the root ح ل ل‎ (ḥ-l-l). Cognate with Classical Syriac ܚܠܠ‎ (ḥallel, “to cleanse, to purify”). Doublet of মহল (mohol) and মহল্লা (moholla).
