Letter
ஃ • (ḥ)
- a special letter in Tamil known by many names such as mupparpulli, thaninilai and most commonly as aytam. Historically used as bridging letter for a short vowel and a hard consonant, it has now mostly lost its traditional usage and used as a diacritic with certain consonants like ப் (p) to form ஃப் (f), ஜ் (j) to form ஃஜ் (z), ஸ் (s) to form ஃஸ் (x), and க் (k) to form ஃக் (kh). On its own, it is pronounced as 'ugh' or 'ah' like a visarga.
