From Proto-South-Dravidian. It seems related to எழு (eḻu, to emit sound), எழால் (eḻāl, musical notes of the yazh), எழுப்பு (eḻuppu, to call forth) and எழுவு (eḻuvu). Cognate with Malayalam ഏറില് (ēṟilŭ, music).
