From Proto-Dravidian *yāṯu. Cognate with Manda (India) ଏଯ (ēy), Tamil ஆறு (āṟu), Malayalam ആറ് (āṟŭ), Kuvi ଏଯୁ, Tulu ಉದೆ (ude), Tulu ಹುದೆ (hude).

1. A river.

   ఏరు యెన్ని వంకలు పోయినా, సముద్రములోనే పడవలెను

   ēru yenni vaṅkalu pōyinā, samudramulōnē paḍavalenu

   However many twists the river take, it must fall into the sea at last.
