From Proto-Dravidian *wirinc- (finger).[1] Cognate with Tamil விரல் (viral), Kannada ಬೆರಲ್ (beral), ಬೆರಲು (beralu), ಬೆರಳ್ (beraḷ), or ಬೆರಳು (beraḷu), Tulu ಬಿರಲ್ (biral), ಬಿರೆಲ್ (birel), ಬಿರೆಲ್ಲ್ (birell), ಬೆರಳು (beraḷu), or ಪಿರೆಲ್ (pirel), Malayalam വിരൽ (viral).[2]
