From Proto-Tai *sɤmꟲ (sour). Cognate with Thai ส้ม (sôm), Lao ສົ້ມ (som), ᦉᦳᧄᧉ (ṡum²), Tai Dam ꪶꪎ꫁ꪣ, Ahom 𑜏𑜤𑜪 (suṃ), Zhuang soemj. Compare Middle Chinese (MC suɑn, “sour”).
