Either from an Iranian language, cf. Persian هیل (hil, cardamom), or from Armenian հիլ (hil, cardamom). Ultimately from Proto-Dravidian *ēla (cardamom). Compare also Tamil ஏலம் (ēlam), Telugu ఏల (ēla) and Malayalam ഏലം (ēlaṃ).
