Likely a borrowing. Possibly from Latin citrullum or citrus. Compare Italian cetriolo for meaning development and Old Armenian վարունգ (varung) for citrus and cucumber meanings. Cognate with Old Armenian կիտր (kitr, cucumber), Mingrelian კჷნტჷრი (ḳənṭəri), Svan კინტრ (ḳinṭr).
