Etymology

From Middle Chinese 處女 (MC t͡ɕʰɨʌX|t͡ɕʰɨʌH ɳɨʌX|ɳɨʌH). /syodyo/ > /syozyo/.

Originally referred in Japanese to a woman in a house ([(いえ)]()(おんな) ie ni iru onna), more specifically to an unmarried woman.
