Etymology

From Old Japanese. First appears in the Kojiki of 712 CE in its 連用形 (ren'yōkei, continuative form), spelled in phonetic man'yōgana as 夜須久 (yasuku).[1][2] Cognate with 休む (yasumu, to rest).[3] Compare adverb やすやす (yasuyasu, easily).[4]
