Borrowing of Dutch Bengala (“Bengal”),[1][2][3][4] or of Portuguese Bengala (“Bengal”),[5] as both the cloth and the red iron oxide were imported from Bengal in the Edo period.[5][6]
Doublet of ベンガル (Bengaru, “Bengal”). The kanji spelling is an example of phonetic ateji (当て字).
First cited to a text from 1693.[5]
