From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *rap (“to cross (river), to ford, to wade”) (provisional) (STEDT). Cognate with Tibetan [script needed] (rab(s), “ford”) & Jingpho [script needed] (rap⁵⁵); possibly unrelated to 瀨 (OC *raːds) (Schuessler, 2007).
