Etymology

Older form is ねぶる, from the same root with Old Japanese 寝 (nu) (whence 寝る (neru, “to sleep; to lie down”)). Cognate with Okinawan 眠ずん (ninzun) and Yonaguni 眠どぅん (nindun).[1]
