Etymology

From Old Japanese; first attested in a mokkan excavated from the Former Naniwa Palace, 652 - 686, as man'yōgana form 伊加比 <igapi₁>, apparently a half-calque of Middle Chinese 貽貝 (jɨ pɑiH) with (かい) (kai, shell). Some theories that describe the former part () (i) as () (i, different) or (いな) (ina, no) in a sense of "different or uncommon type of shells" seem folk etymology.
