Compound of 黒 (kuro, “black”) +‎ 山 (yama, “mountain”).[1][2][3]

First cited to the 伏屋の物語 (Fuseya no Monogatari), one of the 御伽草子 (Otogi-zōshi) written during the Muromachi period (1392–1573).[1]
