Etymology

First attested in the Sohak eonhae (小學諺解 / 소학언해), 1586, as Middle Korean 우기다 (Yale: wukita).

Probably related to 억지 (eokji, “stubbornness”), where -ji appears to be a suffix. The Gyeongsang dialect form of 억지 is (uk).
