From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ā́mātā (“son-in-law”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵem- (“to marry”). Cognate with Sanskrit जामातृ (jā́mātṛ, “son-in-law”), Persian داماد (dâmâd).
