Etymology
Derived from Sanskrit পাল (pāla) as -আল, and then developing the extension া (a) to form -আলা (-ala). According to Chatterji and Sukumar Sen this was influenced in spelling by the cognate in Hindi -वाला (-vālā)/Urdu والا during the 19th century, rendering the modern spelling.
