-슴다

Korean

Etymology

Contraction of 습니다 (seumnida).

Suffix

슴다 (-seumda)

  1. (colloquial) Colloquial version of 습니다 (seumnida), a declarative suffix in the 하십시오체 (hasipsioche, “formal polite”) speech level.
  2. (Hamgyong, Yanbian) the declarative suffix in the 하십시오체 (hasipsioche, “formal polite”) speech level.

Usage notes

In Hamgyeong and Yanbian, this '슴다' form essentially replaces '습니다' as the declarative suffix in the formal polite speech level. In Yanbian, a related form, 슴까 (contracted form of 습니까) also appears to have replaced the 슴둥 suffix among younger Korean speakers in traditionally Yukchin Dialect speaking areas.
