Spanish

Etymology

From Latin exitus, perfect passive participle of exeō (go out). Doublet of ejido. Cognate with English exit, although taking on a completely different meaning. Displaced Latin successus.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈeɡsito/ [ˈeɣ̞.si.t̪o]
  • (file)
  • Rhymes: -eɡsito
  • Syllabification: é‧xi‧to

Noun

éxito m (plural éxitos)

  1. success
  2. hit; something popular or well received

Usage notes

  • Éxito is a false friend, and does not mean "exit" (even though it is derived from a Latin word that would). The word for "exit" in Spanish is salida.
