éxito
Spanish
Etymology
From Latin exitus, perfect passive participle of exeō (“go out”). Doublet of ejido. Cognate with English exit, although taking on a completely different meaning. Displaced Latin successus.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈeɡsito/ [ˈeɣ̞.si.t̪o]
Audio (file) - Rhymes: -eɡsito
- Syllabification: é‧xi‧to
Usage notes
- Éxito is a false friend, and does not mean "exit" (even though it is derived from a Latin word that would). The word for "exit" in Spanish is salida.
Derived terms
- con éxito (“successfully”)
- exitoso
- lista de éxitos
