From Ottoman Turkish اولچمك (ölçmek),[1] from Middle Turkic ölç-, possibly related to Old Turkic [script needed] (*ül(ü)ş-). Compare Old Turkic [script needed] (ülgü, scale, size, dimension) and [script needed] (ülüg, share, portion).[2].
