Probably from Arabic جَيِّد (jayyid, “good”) or a related form. Compare جَواد (jawād, “bountiful, generous”) and جَوْد (jawd), جائِد (jāʾid, “copious rain”). As a possible semantic influence compare also Italian beni (“goods, means, riches”).
