Etymology
From Arabic زُجاج (zujāj, “glass”), a word with several variants in the Semitic languages. The Maltese form presupposes *ḵujāj. Compare the even more distorted dialectal Arabic form قُزاز (quzāz). Furthermore Hebrew זכוכית (zəḵūḵīṯ) alongside זגוגית (zəḡūḡīṯ).
