Etymology

From Arabic زُجاج‎ (zujāj, “glass”), a word with several variants in the Semitic languages. The Maltese form presupposes *ḵujāj. Compare the even more distorted dialectal Arabic form قُزاز‎ (quzāz). Furthermore Hebrew זכוכית‎ (zəḵūḵīṯ) alongside זגוגית‎ (zəḡūḡīṯ).
