From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *rəj (“water; liquid; body fluid”). Cognate with Burmese ရေ (re) (Old Burmese ရိယ် (riy)), Tangut 𗋽 (*zjɨ̱r²), and Tshangla ri¹³. Compare Lhao Vo qid and Zaiwa wui.
