1. A diacritical mark of the Greek script, called περισπωμένη (perispōménē, “twisted around”) in Ancient Greek, and found on ᾶ (â), ῆ (ê), ῖ (î), ῦ (û), and ῶ (ô). It is also known as circumflex and is printed either like an inverted breve or like a tilde. It was used to indicate the presence of a falling pitch accent on a long vowel or diphthong in the penultimate or final syllable of a word.
