Etymology
From the Mediaeval Byzantine Greek ποντίκιν (pontíkin), ποντίκιον (pontíkion), diminutives of ποντικός (pontikós), from the Ancient Greek Ποντικός μῦς (Pontikós mûs, “a kind of weasel”), that is a μῦς (mûs, “mouse”) from Pontus (Ποντικός (Pontikós, “Pontic”). The computing term is a semantic loan from English mouse.
