From a Turkic source, ultimately from Old Turkic Qïtaǰ (“Khitan”), from Khitan 𘱿𘲫 (*Qid ún, “Khitan”), the Mongolic people who ruled Manchuria, then Northern China, then Central Asia from the 9th to 13th centuries. More at Cathay.
