Одесса
Russian
Etymology
Borrowed from Ancient Greek Ὀδησσός (Odēssós) — the name of the ancient Greek colony, which, as was mistakenly thought, was located on the territory of Odessa (actually in Asia Minor). The name was given to the city in 1795 at the suggestion of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
