From Proto-Turkic *(i)aĺ-a- (to eat), from Proto-Turkic *(i)aĺ (food, meal)[1].

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (aša-, to eat)[2]; Kumyk ашамакъ (aşamaq, to eat); Karachay-Balkar ашаргъа (to eat); Yakut аһаа (ahaa, to eat), etc.
