Etymology

From Proto-Abkhaz-Abaza *ǯ̍ə́-ḳā (with a not quite clear second component). Cognate with Abaza джькӏа (ǯ’ḳā). Nikolayev / Starostin further derive from Proto-Northwest Caucasian *ǯ̍ǝ (salt).
