3. (historical) larder, pantry (a room for storing food and dishes and preparing snacks and tea)

• This word refers more to a place than to a method of serving food, in contrast with the English word buffet. Hence it takes the preposition в (v, “in, at; to”) when answering the questions где? (= в буфе́те) and куда? (= в буфе́т). In Russian, the method of serving food is referred to as шведский стол (smorgasbord, literally: "Swedish table").
