Inherited from Proto-Slavic *vъzdьlě. Compare Polish wedle and Czech vedle from Proto-Slavic *vъdьlě, as well as по́дле (pódle) from Proto-Slavic *podьlě. Syntactically, воз- (voz-) + an element related to длина́ (dliná, “length”).
