Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *vertišče; equivalent to врещ (vrešt, bag, sack) + -ище (-ište). Originally meaning something woven, intertwined (cf. Old Church Slavonic врѣтищє (vrětište, large basket, sack, coat)).
